Ministry of Defence: Permanent Under Secretary of State for Defence: Registered Files (D/PUS and PUS Series)
Registered files in the D/PUS series concerning the wide range of subjects dealt with by the professional head of civilian staff in the Ministry of Defence. They include a number of files on the Committee on the Civil Service 1966-1968 (the Fulton Committee) of which Sir James Dunnett was a member.
Under the Defence (Transfer of Functions) Act 1964, the Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry were absorbed into an enlarged Ministry of Defence under a Secretary of State for Defence from 1 April 1964. As a result, the post of Permanent Under Secretary of State (PUS) for Defence was created. The PUS was the professional head of civilian staff in the Ministry of Defence and also a member of the Defence Council. The first PUS was Sir Henry Hardman, who had previously served as Permanent Secretary to the Minister of Defence and was succeeded as follows:-
- Sir Henry Hardman 1964-1966
- Sir James Dunnett 1966-1974
- Sir Michael Cary 1974-1976
- Sir Frank Cooper 1976-1982
- Sir Clive Whitmore 1983-1988
- Sir Michael Quinlan 1988-1992
- Sir Christopher France 1992 onwards
