War Office: Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force: Military Headquarters Papers, Second World War
Papers of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, covering the invasion of Northern Europe (Operation Overlord), 1944 to 1945.
The records in this series, with some exceptions, are microprint copies of the original papers held in Washington. In general the papers are in good order but in some cases the order has been disturbed during filming.
Ministry of Defence
The Allied forces under command of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary landed in France in June 1944 to liberate enemy occupied Europe and to conquer Germany. The Headquarters of the British 21st Army Group formed the tactical headquarters for the cross-Channel move and for the land operation immediately following.
In January, 1943, even before the Supreme Allied Commander was appointed, his Chief of Staff organisation was set up to plan the cross-Channel invasion.
