The diaries are a record of appointments (e.g. 'meeting at 10.00am') compiled by the Prime Minister's Diary Secretary and are a limited record of personal and official appointments. They do not provide additional material such as information about the meetings themselves.

The Diaries form one of the categories of records that former Prime Ministers are allowed to take with them on leaving office and The Churchill Archives Centre holds a complete set of typescript diaries for Mrs Thatcher.

Administrative / biographical background:

Two versions of the diaries are held by the Cabinet Office. One is a set of typescript diaries (it is not known when they were typed) and the other are original manuscript versions, which it is assumed were kept by the No 10 Diary Secretary. There are a complete set of typescript diaries for 1979-1990 and manuscript diaries for 1980-1983 and 1987-1990.
