Description:

This series consists of miscellaneous records of the administration of justice in the Palatinate of Lancaster, maintained by the Clerk of the Crown.

The main records include:

  • Crown minute books, 1686-1877 which record the business of each session, usually with details of the names of grand and petty jurors; the names of prisoners tried; their offences, verdicts and sentences; indictments preferred; coroners inquisitions; a note of removal of actions by writ of certiorari; and recognizances.
  • Outlawry rolls, 1377-1543.
  • Writs of certiorari, with copies of indictments and pleadings, Chas II-Geo III.
  • Judges' commissions, bundled together by reign, Chas II-Geo I.
  • Order books, 1736-1878.
  • Orders for payment of the prosecuting attorneys costs, 1815-1857.
  • Bills of costs, 1819-1844.
