Description:
Content: Folio 17. Letter from Thomas Canning, Elsenham Vicarage, Bishops Stortford, to the Poor Law Commission. Canning seeks advice regarding the case of the wife of a man in his service who had an illegitimate child about four years previously. The father of the child paid £25 to the parish and the mother had received the sum of one shilling and sixpence per week from the parish officer. Recently however she had been told by the board of guardians that her husband must support the child. Canning states that the mother has a clear right to any remaining money advanced by the father of her child and the money cannot belong to the parish. Paper Number: 1476/A/1838.
