Description:
Content: Folios 124-126. Letter from Thomas N Firmin, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southampton Incorporation, to the Poor Law Board, forwarding for their information a certificate from the medical officer of the workhouse recommending a temporary change of diet for the children in the workhouse and also a copy of a resolution of the guardians on this subject. Copy of a resolution made by the guardians at a meeting on 20 June 1853 where it was resolved that the master of the workhouse carry out the recommendations of the medical officer and that the clerk forwards a copy of the certificate and this resolution to the Poor Law Board. Copy of a certificate dated 20 June 1853, made by Patrick R Mackey, Medical officer of the Workhouse, stating that a change in the diet of the children in the workhouse is essential to improve their health as several of them are affected with [scabatic] eruptions. He recommends the following diet: Breakfast. Bread and milk daily. Dinner. Mutton and green vegetables with vinegar on two days a week. Rice well boiled with a sauce of molasses and vinegar on two days a week. Beef and green vegetables on Sunday. Normal diet for remainder of week. Supper. Bread and cheese and a quarter [illegible] of beer daily. Annotated: The only objection to the proposed change in diet is the introduction of beer as a [general] beverage - but as beer is an [intoxicant] the change will probably only be temporary, and I recommend that the [instructions] proposed by the medical officer be sanctioned. Signed W H T H [W H Toovey Hawley, Inspector], dated 25 June 1853. Further annotated: Acknowledge receipt. Signed C, dated 28 June 1853. Paper Number: 24012/1853. Poor Law Union Number 407. Counties: Hampshire.
