Folio 1: case no. 1, John Colt, aged 22, Lieutenant; sick or hurt, relapse of dysentery, which was originally contracted at Kahding; put on sick list 1 January 1863, invalided 3 January 1863, sent 25 January 1863 to England.

Folios 1-2: case no. 2, James Laid, aged 24, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, dysentery, he was under treatment for primary syphilis since 8 April to 11 May [1862] when the ship left Plymouth. He contracted diarrhoea between October and November during Kahding expedition; put on sick list 1 January 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 19 January 1863 to Hong Kong Hospital, invalided 23 January 1863 to England.

Folio 2: case no. 3, Charles Gregory, aged 28, Private Marine; sick or hurt, pleuro pneumonia, he was under treatment six different times since he joined this ship with syphilitic rheumatism, syphilitic sores and bronchitis; put on sick list 2 January 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 2 January 1863 to Hong Kong Hospital, invalided 23 January 1863 to England.

Folio 6: case no. 11, William Wade, aged 40, Sick Berth Steward; sick or hurt, dysentery, its appeared that he had suffered from diarrhoea since the Kahding expedition, he was treating himself with mercury and now in a state of ptyalism…; put on sick list 22 January 1863 at Hong Kong, invalided 23 January 1863 to England.

Folio 6: case no. 12, Cuthbert T. Sayton, aged 22, Second Master; sick or hurt, syphilis, he is admitted with gonorrhoea discharge; put on sick list 22 January 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 22 January 1863 to Hong Kong Hospital.

Folios 6-7: case no. 13, William Fox, aged 24, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, contusion wound of left parietal bone a little to the left of the medianline caused by a blow from a hammer by a China man during a scuffle whilst on shore on leave; put on sick list 1 February 1863 at Hong Kong, invalided 17 February 1863 to England by [HMS Sphinx].

Folio 7: case no. 14, William Blight, aged 31, Leading Stoker; sick or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list 7 February 1863 at Hong Kong, invalided 17 February 1863 to England by [HMS Sphinx].

Folio 7: case no. 15, William Hayes, aged 23, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, syphilis, with six soft chancres on the prepuce and suppurating bubo in left groin; put on sick list 1 February 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 22 February 1863 to Hong Kong Hospital.

Folios 7-8: case no. 16, Joseph Hutchinson, aged 17, Boy 2nd Class; sick or hurt, otorrhoea, his health completely broken down by repeated attacks of earache, was under treatment in the Naval Hospital at Simon’s Bay; put on sick list 17 February 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 23 February 1863 to Naval Hospital HMS Melville (subsequently invalided).

Folio 8: case no. 18, William Hutchinson, aged 24, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, syphilis; put on sick list 22 February 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 22 February 1863 to Naval Hospital HMS Melville (returned to the ship). Folio 8: case no. 23, Robert Thompson, aged 26, Able Seaman; sick or hurt, anemia, joined this ship from the “Vulcan” in a weak state his digestive organ deranged and was also suffering from catarrhal symptoms; put on sick list 22 February 1863 at Hong Kong, discharged 22 February 1863 to Naval Hospital HMS Melville.

Folio 8: case no. 24, Edward J. Richards, aged 16, Boy 2nd Class; sick or hurt, drowned, fell over board from the main rigging while undergoing “masthead punishment”; died 5 March 1863.

Folios 9-10: case no. 25, Paul [Mootteir], aged 20, Private Marine; sick or hurt, small pox, complained of giddiness, nausea and occasional vomiting but no rigors; put on sick list 28 April 1863 at Yokohama, died 10 May 1863, no post mortem examination.

Folios 10-11: case no. 26, William Stewart, aged 38, Bandsman; sick or hurt, compression of the brain, complete insensibility, breathing stertorous and accompanied by the characteristic whiff of compression, pupils dilated and inert upon approach of light…there was abraded spot on the left side of the ocipital protuberance, the man came off from the shore… the accident happened while endeavouring to walk down a ladder leading to the main deck he fell on the back of his head; put on sick list 5 June 1863 at Yokohama, died 6 June 1863, [included post mortem examination].

Folios 11-12: case no. 27, Alfred Clark, aged 29, Gunner Royal Marine Artillery; sick or hurt, phthisis; put on sick list 15 April 1863 at Yokohama, discharged 17 May 1863 to Civil Hospital at Yokohama, died 12 August 1863 at 4.40 pm.

Folio 12: case no. 28, John J. S. Josling, aged 36, Captain; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, head shattered by a round shot from a field piece the brain scattered about the deck struck by the same shot as Commander Wilmot.

Folio 12: case no. 29, Edward Wilmot, aged 32, Commander; sick or hurt, gunshot wound, struck on the back of the head while on duty on the bridge during the action with the Fort of Kugoshima.
