George ORWELL alias Eric Arthur BLAIR: British. Born in India, ORWELL worked in the Indian Police Service from 1922 to 1927 when he resigned on a point of principle and went to work as a journalist in Paris. There he took an interest in the French Communist Party and offered his services as the correspondent of 'Workers' Life', the forerunner of the Daily Worker. He then worked for a short time as a schoolmaster in England. Although in 1936 he was known to have addressed Communist Party meetings, by 1941 the Security Service raised no objections to his employment by the BBC or as an accredited correspondent to Allied Forces |
